“Who knew… that… thirteen year old girls… were so good… at wrestling?” Cameo gasped out that afternoon in their little cubby beneath the bus. Infinity shook her head as she carefully dabbed away the sweat from around his wound. He hissed through his teeth.
“It hurts, doesn’t it? Now you know why ‘rubbing salt in the wound’ is an expression,” Infinity said sympathetically.
“No, it’s fine,” he grimaced. She rolled her eyes as she wound a bandage tightly around his arm.
“Oh, please. Your arm looked like you cut it open with a dagger. Of course it hurts! Now, sit still.” She finished off the wrap and tied a small knot. “There. Please try not to hurt yourself again, okay?”
“Конечно моя дорогая. Все для тебя, любовь моя.”
Infinity lightly smacked his uninjured arm. “You know I don’t like it when you start talking in Russian!”
“Sorry!” He held up his hands in defense. “I promise I won’t use Russian unless my mind is going crazy.”
She glared at him. “Don’t even joke like that.”
“Okay, okay. But I can't help it!”
“Why not?”
“I,” he faltered. “I don’t know. It happens when I get stressed or upset and then I go off and он просто выпадает, и я ничего не могу сделать, чтобы остановить его, и я не знаю, почему, или когда, или-”
“Okay, you’re okay. I’m sorry I asked.” She pulled his head onto her shoulder. He sighed and kissed up and down her neck. She shivered.
“What?” he asked. “You don’t like when I do that?”
“No, I love it. Don’t stop.”
“You shivered.”
“You give me chills.”
“Well, you-” He was cut off by another sharp knock. “Aww,” he groaned, and kicked open the hatch. “We’re finishing this conversation later!”
Ethaniel was standing outside, saluting in a too-big army uniform. “Troops are ready for inspection, sir!”
“Are you serious? Where did you even find that?” Cameo asked incredulously.
“Well, sir, you know how we said we broke into a Canadian military base? They had a couple of these lying around the helicopter. I borrowed it, General, sir.”
Cameo sighed and jumped out of the compartment. “Go put on regular clothes like a normal person, you doof. And you’re sure the kids are ready?”
“We’ve been here nearly a week, Cameo,” the other boy said, dropping the silly salute. “If they’re not ready now, they likely never will be.” He turned and walked away.
“Cameo?” Infinity slipped out of the bunk. “You realize we’re going into war, right?”
A hundred thoughts flooded his head. His brothers hollow eyes; the look of terror on Infinity’s face when he nearly killed her; Harley’s tearful outburst at the hotel; Charisma choking out an apology as he strangled her; Ethaniel, dying on the back of the snowmobile. All people he had hurt. All people he would keep hurting until this was all over.
“Yeah, I do.”
“What if-” she swallowed hard, “what if we lose?”
“Then we died for the best cause.”
“And that’s what scares me."
