"So Loz, what did you get up to today", my Mum, Susan says as she steps through the door, kicking off her heels and dropping her briefcase and handbag straight down on the floor. The fact that I'm not surprised by her question doesn't even surprise me.
I really should respond with something intelligent and representative of my scholarly abilities, but instead, I choose, "Not much really. Took MJ for a walk/run to the beach, got a coffee on the way home, saw Carrigan next door and then basically did fuck all for the rest of the day. How was your day Mum?" And the humdrum conversation begins and I tune out and respond with a sound of intrigue and interest every now and again to pretend as I care about the new criminal case of assholes she apparently received today from the blocks at her office because they couldn't be bothered dealing with the defendant and his annoying ways. These days, especially after having worked at my mother's legal firm on and off for the past 10 years, I feel like I could practice Law just from working there. Don't get me wrong, I love the place, the people, half of them have raised me and known me since I was a child, but doing what she does, does not appetise or interest me in the slightest the same way that teaching doesn't do anything for my mother. She definitely wasn't surprised when at the ripe old age of 7 years old I told her that I wanted to be a teacher. Secretly I think she was hoping I would change my mind to a bit more of a lucrative area in a career, instead I kept on that path and went a little further in the education than I should have.
Not even 5 minutes later, my dad, Peter walks straight in the door, kisses Mum hello, still gross even as an adult, and asks me the exact same question as my mother. My response... the exact same one I gave my mother.
"Random question, but I didn't get a chance to ask Carrigan if he knew who was moving in with him yet to the house. I thought you guys might finally have a name. I need details. Mum, you know my desperate need of eye candy right now." Mum has always been amazing with my dating life and it's pretty funny really because now she's the one pushing me to swipe on these dating apps that I hate and trying to set me up with distant friends of hers kids and a whole other bunch of connections she wants to be made. Unfortunately, she's allowed to say I told you so about Matthew because she always said that she just didn't like the guy. Even after 2 years together, she really had never warmed up to him.
"Loz, all I've been told today, which is a bit more of an update than we had yesterday is that he's moving in tomorrow afternoon. We aren't allowed to know yet, even with the house being ours because of the release papers he has to sign coming off the National teams and into the state league. All John told us is that he might need to borrow some of our big blankets and sheets that we keep over here for the house when they need spares." She turned towards dad, with a rather interesting grin on her face. "Actually, I'm glad she asked because I did actually give her number to John this morning when I rang him to sort out that other stuff for the sponsor's dinner. So Loz, this new person has your number and will ring if they need you and to stop by the house. Therefore, I give you total permission to laze around the house all day tomorrow and try not to go anywhere so that if this new person does call, you're here ready to go."
"HOLY SHIT BALLS. Tomorrow!"
