Holidays never last, especially with my family, holidays tend to include me, at home with the dog on the couch, binge-watching a new TV show that I've been putting off watching whilst I study during the semester. It really is quite delectable, until of course my parents come home and complain that I have done, and I quote "fuck all, all day".
Well, forgive me over-achieving-parents-who-have-way-more-work-to-keep-them-going-than-I-ever-want-to-have, but some of us need a break from working on their super important Masters in Education, but no that does not count cause apparently it's not work. Pfft, my family for you.
Anyway... life on holidays with my family is always slow and rather interesting at all times. We live in the coastal town of Mayfair. It's not too bad, it's where I grew up, it's where I want to raise a family sure, but first hopefully comes a life of my own without my family getting their names involved in my life because that's bound to happen in this town. Either somebody knows my mum, my dad, my brother, someone who's related to me, just not necessarily me. Again, a whole other issue that I deal with on a daily basis every time I come back here, which now with my Masters is a lot more often than I would like.
The house is so peaceful during the day though. I get a whole 10 hours of uninterrupted study/relax/chill time to do whatever I want. Most days I do actually get some work done and get my research analysed and talk to my advisor about my next research task and inventory of data, but this week, I have concluded is a me week. I have taken no phone calls from schools about technology lectures. I have blocked phone calls from my ex, who decided it was a fantastic idea to cheat on me whilst I was helping his family move house. And luckily for me, I have evaded the basketball courts at all costs.
Basketball in this household is a right of passage, basically, since my brother decided to be really good at it, it was a prerequisite to being a noticed child at the dinner table. I played, and some would say well considering I got to national teams and so on, but I didn't want to go further, it was my hobby, never wanting to be my income. He plays pro now so we don't see Theo as much as we would like to, but he and I are way closer than two people thousands of kilometres apart should be.
Exhibit A - he got my best friend in the whole wide world, Annabelle, to come to Mayfair all the way from Melbourne and spend a whole week with me after Mr. Asshole decided he couldn't keep his micropenis in his pants any longer. We drank, we laughed and we annoyed the shit out of my parents, but it was the best week of my life. Exhibit B - he never forgets anything! Like anything. He remembers my birthday every year, without fail even though there are thousands of things going on in his very important life. He also remembers that my all-time favourite flower is a Gardenia. I love the smell, I love the shape of the flower and I love the romance of the flower. He will somehow get these to me every year in a very large bunch of flowers along with a book of some sort attached (normally one chosen by his fiance, and my other bestie Grace, cause the whole best friend and brother thing does actually happen in real life and not just books). I don't know how he gets them here considered they don't like heat, but he always does.
No matter the role that he plays in our family as the top dog, we love each other, and I definitely acknowledge that without him I would not have some of my friends that I do have and definitely wouldn't have some of the A-Grade eye candy to look at when he comes back into Australia to play State League. State League is the Mackay tradition in the National Off-Season. Every year, Mayfair signs these huge players from the National tournament who are kind of ready to hang up the boots or even just not having good seasons. As soon as they come to us, they fire up their game again and all of a sudden they are top dog nationwide. There are two more weeks till practice starts for the newcomers and that's when I'll get to see the fresh meat and Leo will absolutely demolish them at the first practice.
Leo is the Mayfair fitness coach and he's a killer at the start of season. He puts me through my paces every week, in his words keeping me in shape so that when I change my mind about this whole teaching thing I can go back and play again. He wishes!
All I know is that the rental house is still open with Carrigan having a spare room up for grabs. Carrigan Weathers lives next door to us in a rental property that my parents own and lease to the basketball association for their players of the season. Carrigan lives there year-round though since he works in town and all that jazz, but he's got the place to himself and therefore they will put the newest signing in there. Mum and Dad should know by now. I keep asking them and asking them, hoping that I will gain access to some sordid detail that I can go and stalk them on socials, that is if I don't already know them. But after Matthew, a tall, very good looking basketball player at my arms reach would be rather helpful to the healing process, as Maddy likes to call it, but we shall see, it could be a total random.
