As it turned out, they used the latest technology, including a laser to project a 'dome' over the temple to create an artificial space. Then, a combination of methane gas and other chemicals would produce a system where the air people breathe inside the walls of the temple would be conducive to them not feeling any pain or sickness. It worked on the nervous system which is where all pain stemmed from.
They were trying to emulate what had taken place on the "Bermuda Triangle" or in the Pacific at the "Devil's Sea" but with the added benefit of getting rid of ALL pain. They said if they would have succeeded, it would've been a society "game-changer" and the world would've changed forever.
