โWell, fantastic,โ Ethaniel groaned. โWhat did you do to her?โ
Cameo shrugged. โIโd rather not say,โ he smirked, trying to play it cool. But Infinity looked at him and their eyes locked. She knew. She knew everything. She could tell everyone how weak he used to be. How weak he still was.
But she didnโt.ย
The moment passed and Cameo let out a breath he didnโt know he was holding. Soon enough, they were wheels up and in the air, staring down at the United States. Cameo leaned back and closed his eyes, submitting to the dark world inside his mind.
Infinity sighed and slid her gaze to the rest of the group.ย
โSo, whatโs been going on with you guys? I mean, Cameo said that you guys got all the kids back home, but that couldnโt have taken six months, could it?โ
Harley, Tanner, and Ethaniel exchanged tense glances. Eventually, Tanner cleared his throat.
โWell,โ he began, eyes darting nervously around the cabin, โit only took about four months. We took a two-month break in between. We, umm, needed a break from all the, uhโฆโ He trailed off, unsure of what to say next.ย
โCrying parents?โ Harley supplied with a shaky smile.
โRight, crying parents,โ Tanner nodded. โAnyway, Ethaniel was complaining about not being able to spend enough time with Harley.โ
Ethaniel gasped. โI was not!โ he exclaimed indignantly.ย
โYeah, you were. And donโt interrupt,โ Tanner said, elbowing Ethaniel in the ribs.
โOW!โ Ethaniel yelled. Cameoโs eyes shot open and he sat up quickly.
โWhat? What happened?โ he asked, frantically searching the cabin.ย
โNothing,โ Ethaniel grumbled, rubbing his torso. โTanner just forgot that I got shot threeย months ago, and that Iโm still not totally healed, thatโs all. Iโll live.โ Cameo sat back down, hard, then leaned forward and put his head in his hands, muttering things in Russian. Infinity stared at him for a few seconds, then shook herself and looked away.ย
Harley leaned over and placed a hand on Ethanielโs knee.
โYou know the doctor said itโd be a few years before the pain goes away,โ she reminded him.
โYeah, well, that idiot also said I'd probably never be able to fight again, yet here we are,โ he snapped back. โAnybody got Tylenol?โ he asked, grimacing and doubling over. Harley tugged open her backpack and pulled out a package of Tylenol and a water bottle. He gratefully threw back the pills and lay back in his seat. โThis is gonna be a long trip,โ he murmured.
No one disagreed.
