Wait, What Now?
Chapter Three- Reconditioning
“There you go, Gem! You’re getting the hang of it!” exclaimed Moony as she watched her newest charge undergo the rigorous physical challenges she had set up for him. Her blue eyes continuously flitted from the sweating, panting knight to her clipboard then to a stopwatch hanging around her neck. “You’ve only got… twenty more minutes jog left then you get a break.”
Gem wiped sweat out of his brown eyes with a not-so-white towel that was strung near the tread mill he was currently dying on. He sucked breaths in hard. “And… Why… Oh shit this sucks… do I need to run like this? I thought I was dead?”
Moony laughed and read several monitors hooked up to Gem. “Oh it’s nothing to sweat about, Gem.” The young, tall woman laughed at her own joke. “I’m a real ham sometimes, ain’t I?” She pushed a pink-dyed bang out of her eyes. “All characters who die in fiction get sent to one of us doctors here to get reconditioned.”
“Reconditioned?” Gem repeated, blowing hard. He glanced sideways at Moony but nearly lost his balance. Cursing, he steadied himself with the side rails. “What the hell does that mean?”
Moony looked at the stopwatch and pressed a button on the treadmill, speeding it up. “Yeah. Reconditioning. It’s our job to get you ready for your new roles in stories, bruh.” She checked the monitor’s again; the knight’s heart rate was rising to 99 beats per minute. Damn, she thought. This cat is in tip-top physical condition.
Gem bit his lip, not liking the sound of this reconditioning. “Other roles? What other roles could a handsome, buff knight like me fill?”
Moony coughed quietly and shrugged. “Quite a lot, bruh. Quite a lot.” The P.A. turned a page on her clip board. “Yep. You should be assigned to your new role in about… a week’s time.”
