And continues to be improved and outperformed her peers. They just don't seem to have the same drive that she does, I say that in the past 20 years I've only seen maybe 10 or so recruits with her drive. She seems to have a powerful hate towards the zombies. That is good, too many people are complacent with the zombies now. Once they were harnessed and used as resources, time went into researching ways to repair them the closest. It was fruitless but it broke the monotony of fighting them and completely predictable ways. Those years of fighting through the bottom half of North America when we hit our stride, they were so boring I almost started looking for survivors for other reasons then to add to our cause. And pass basic today. She found an old loophole that said she could take a physical and mental test to prove she was capable of surviving on her own and in a group. Of course she passed, the best and brightest always do. I moved her to my Scout Group, I can't wait to show her some of the real tricks of the trade. Zombies aren't the brightest of hunters, being the ultimate and persistence hunting does not make an apex predator. Being able to hunt the other predators, that is what makes an apex predator. That's why humans will never die out, we are not the toughest around but we certainly can out think our pray. Especially when all they do is try to chase you down. Anne is progressing well, she has a bit of trouble with the psychology aspect that I'm trying to teach her but that's to be expected. She doesn't understand that I'm teaching her how to defend herself against humans as well. She doesn’t realize that there will be more humans than zombies one day, I think that's the thing that her generation does not understand. They just take advantage of the free labor and entertainment but what happens when the last of them falls apart? It's like the old bubbles of the past, this too shall burst and leave chaos in its wake. Sustainability has always been a difficult concept for humans to understand. It’s always been one bubble or another bursting. It's been happening for ages, the last one being the confidence that we could cure everything. Instead of contain and eliminate, the powers that be chose to try and save everyone, an unrealistic goal in any sort of emergency. Prioritize, contain, eliminate, research. Viral test results are in. This is a new virus, born of the original this one does not kill like the old one. New tests show that this new virus does a primitive form of healing restoring priority organs, such as the brain, to working order. Which is why we haven't been able to drop their numbers much. Another thing to worry about the virus, It adapts quickly. The acid I used ate into the skin and then was absorbed into the bloodstream. Another discovery I made by the way, these zombies have blood flow. ZVRS didn't and it always confused the scientist as how they moved. Killing the Hydra takes much more effort as it has a healing factor. The Hydra I tested the acid on regrew the brain mass it I had punched a hole through in half an hour. Through purely physical methods the only way to kill the Hydra is to destroy the brain stem and the heart at the same time. Other methods I have found to be successful is completely submerging them in a caustic base, running molten metal through the head down to the chest through a hole I drilled through the skull. Which I found, to my delight, does not heal at all. All killing of Hydra has been stopped, I don’t see the point in wasting energy when the damn things will just pop back up. I sent my research to the weapons development team and am waiting for their response. Though, we did have some success with squishing them to death by dropping rocks and logs on them, it is not energy feasible outside of clearing the walls every couple days. I figure that is just best to let the dev team come up with the most efficient way of death possible for the Hydra. That's what they do. On a more disturbing note, the men have started reporting that the hydra are now whispering. Not words or anything but the sound they make has definitely gone to whispering. Today's been a rough day for me and a reminder of exactly how old I am. Arthritis in my joints has been a constant companion since the early days, but now it's coupled with osteoporosis and that makes everything much more difficult. Even holding this pen to write hurts. It makes me realize that the feelings I have towards Anne should not be acted on. She is such a wonderful and lovely young woman but she shouldn't be bogged down with an old coot like me. The weapons are quite interesting. There are basically rifles with specialized ammunition. After a week of grueling target practice my men have been manning the walls, taking out hydra as efficiently as possible. On my orders to conserve ammunition, only headshots are being taken bringing down the hydra for a few hours, plenty of time for a squad of finishers to come by and stab them in the heart with a heated steel rod. Jackie Elizabeth McDowell passed away in her sleep last night. Having miraculously never been infected she was found by me, Anne Goeth, her assistant. She was a strong woman, with little need for words. Apparently she saved them for her journal. What she had failed to mention was the past two weeks she had been bed ridden. Blaming arthritis it hurt her to move. Having read through this last journal of hers I’ve found reason in her actions. Why she ordered us to stop killing the hydra, why we didn’t just keep rolling the logs down the wall, why she favored me. She was an amazing teacher and leader, however now she gets to rest. Her funeral is tonight, tomorrow we will follow her wishes to be burned to ash. I wish she had told me her feelings. I loved you too Jackie.
