She - Chapter 3

Being around Rachel is not that bad after all. She is a sweet kid and kept helping me with chores and she asked me to help her with her homework.

She is so young that I can't help but remember myself at that age.

Which wasn't much.

A soft ring echoed in the living room.

I grabbed the phone.

" Hello ?"

"Rosa, it's me, Trevor."

" How in the H did you get my phone number?" I asked him almost smiling.

He kept quiet for a while.

" Thank you for not saying the H word in front of my sister, much appreciated."

I chuckled.

" Everything okay?"

"Oh, yeah. I need to stay here for a little longer, do you mind bringing Rachel here?"

" A Child, on a motorcycle. I'm actually amused by your brotherly skills."

" I know you won't hurt her."

" Good. Now, where ?"

He told me the address and I remembered it somehow, didn't know how though.

" Rachel come on, your brother is waiting."

Her smile was so radiating, I was about to cover my eyes.

" You love your brother so much?"

She nodded.

I chuckled and grabbed her backpack.

No wonder I knew the address, it's where the excavations are taking place.

" Well isn't this a coincidence," I said to myself as I helped Rachel off the bike.

" Rosa!" A voice shouted from the other side.

Rachel went running to her brother's side.

I laughed and grabbed our bags.

Gearing up for the excavation.

"Rosa, I want you meet Mr Anderson." Steven came from behind Trevor.

Oh.

Never saw this one coming.

Trevor's eyes went wide.

Seems he has the same reaction as I am.

" Don't tell me the main archaeologist is you, Rosa?" He said

I nodded.

" And you must be our main founder," I said smiling.

Steven kept looking from me to him.

" We're neighbours." I clarified.

Steven nodded.

" I'll head to work," I said to them.

Steven handed me the booklet.

" We kept digging and excavating this section but nothing came out of it."

" How much ?"

" 5 meters maximum."

" How about we go 90 degrees west and start there. The book said that it should be 5 steps away from the fountain, but the fountain was destroyed so we never knew to which side was it pointing. I'll dig a bit there, it shouldn't be deep down."

Steven nodded and wrote in his notebook.

I turned to see Trevor staring at me.

" What ?"

He shook his head.

I looked down to Rachel.

" See you later Princess."

She gave me a high five and hugged me.

I walked to the spot. Everyone was deep in work and no one paid attention.

Everyone was focused and concentrated not to lose any type of evidence or clue.

After digging for a while nothing of value came up.

Suddenly I remembered something.

I went back to Steven and grabbed the booklet.

" What?" He asked suspiciously.

Knowing me too well.

" Isn't it odd? "

" What is ?"

" With so many workers, working on a single spot where we always thought that the fountain was, but no solid proof or hint that the fountain was actually there."

Steven put his chin in his fingers.

"What are you saying exactly?"

" What if the fountain was moved before it was destroyed in the war ?"

Steven's eyes went wide.

" Not possible. There wasn't any evidence of what you are saying."

" I know, but it's odd."

I pulled the dirty shirt off me.

This gear always got way too dirty.

" I'll head to the archives, just for a while. I need to confirm it."

Steven nodded.

" Hold the excavation for now."

" Why?"

" Imagine how much it will cost if they find out we have been excavation the wrong area all this time."

I turned to Trevor for confirmation.

" It would cost, a lot."

" See?"

Steven thought for a minute, then nodded.

" Don't take long. An hour the most."

" More than plenty."

I said heading to my bike.

" See you around Trevor."

" Can I come with?"

I blinked at him.

" Why?"

" It's interesting."

" What about Rachel ?"

We both looked at Rachel who was playing with a small palette and trying to copy the diggers.

" I'll look after her," Steven said.

" You need help." He continued while winking at me.

I sighed.

" Hop on and hold on tight."

Trevor nodded and hopped behind me.

" This is unnatural," he whispered.

"What? A girl driving a bike."

He chuckled.

"No, a guy holding a girl while she is driving a bike. To be more precise."

He leaned in and grabbed my stomach.

Something flipped in my stomach.

Rosa, mindset.

Work first.

I started the engine.

" Hold on," I said and roared out of there.

The archive wasn't a long drive from here.

I forgot how exciting the work is.

I will never let it go again.
