After the high-level meeting with senior officers, Kurosawa was escorted to the dormitories of Unit A1. The building stood tall, its several stories adorned with an elegant and functional design. As she stepped inside, she found herself in a spacious, well-lit vestibule where cadets moved in a constant flow of activity.
A junior-ranking officer guided her down a lengthy corridor until they reached her assigned room. It was a compact yet orderly space, furnished with a single bed, a desk, and a built-in wardrobe. Kurosawa placed her suitcase on the floor and surveyed her surroundings. Despite its simplicity, the room exuded an air of discipline and efficiency.
Once she had unpacked her belongings and neatly stored her new uniform in the wardrobe, Kurosawa decided to explore the vicinity. She exited her room and navigated the hallways, acquainting herself with the building’s layout. Eventually, she arrived at a common area where several cadets rested or studied.
Upon entering, curious glances followed her. Clearly, her reputation preceded her, and some cadets recognized her immediately. Ignoring the stares, Kurosawa settled into a secluded corner, pulling out a military strategy book to read. The tome, penned by one of the Empire’s renowned strategists, delved into the alliances and betrayals that had shaped the galaxy’s destiny before Kayn’s ascent to power. As she read, her mind wandered back to those intriguing times of power struggles and cunning, where imperial factions vied for supremacy in a deadly game of wits and strength.
Hours passed until a voice resonated through the building’s speakers:
“Attention, Unit A1. You are requested to assemble in the Main Auditorium in 30 minutes for a formal presentation. I repeat, Unit A1, report to the Main Auditorium in 30 minutes.”
Kurosawa closed her book and stood up, joining the stream of cadets heading toward the auditorium. Upon arrival, she found a grand hall with rows of seats arranged in a semicircle facing a central stage. Taking a seat in one of the front rows, she waited patiently. Gradually, the auditorium filled with high-ranking military officials who took their places expectantly. Among the journalists present, Kaido had brought his entire communication team from Sorna.
As Jacko had once said, “Propaganda is the most potent weapon in the entire galaxy.” With it, he could sway masses and create topics of interest that would direct attention toward the Military, further strengthening its position in the impending power game.
A senior officer stepped up to the podium, clearing his throat as the stage lights focused on him. Silence enveloped the auditorium as he began to speak with a powerful and unwavering voice:
“Ladies and gentlemen, recruits, and officers of the Magika Military, it is an honor to welcome you to the formal presentation of Unit A1—the elite of our academy.”
He paused dramatically, scanning the audience.
“In these turbulent times facing our Alliance, following the tragic loss of Kayn, having exceptional warriors willing to defend our way of life is more crucial than ever.”
The mention of Kayn’s name elicited murmurs among the audience. Kurosawa noticed solemn expressions and somber faces among the officers seated in the front rows.
“Unit A1 represents the cream of the crop,” the officer continued. “These young recruits have demonstrated the courage, discipline, and skills necessary to protect our galaxy from the dark forces that threaten to annihilate us.”*
The intergalactic communication cameras focused on the stage, broadcasting live images throughout the Alliance. Kaido, strategically positioned with his transmission team, observed every move and expression of the recruits.
"Alright, folks, gather 'round and let me introduce you to the finest bunch of cadets this galaxy has to offer!" the officer boomed, gesturing towards the rows of young hopefuls standing at attention. "First up, we've got Kai Zamira!"
Kai, with her bright smile and athletic build, stood out from the crowd. Her light brown hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail, and her hazel eyes sparkled with confidence. With a determined stride and a posture that exuded pride, she marched towards the stage.
"Present, sir!" she declared firmly as she reached the podium. "Kai Zamira, hailing from the planet Arcadia. I'm here to defend the Alliance and bring honor to my homeworld. Salla Malla!" She gave a sharp salute and a slight bow before taking her place beside the officer. Her presence commanded attention, radiating strength and character.
The officer nodded approvingly and continued with the introductions. "Next up, we have Reiko Sato."
A petite young woman with a serene and wise gaze rose from her seat. Reiko Sato hailed from one of the Alliance's ocean planets, Akuar, a world mostly covered in vast blue seas. Her raven hair was tied up in a simple bun, with a few loose strands framing her sun-kissed face. She walked towards the stage with a calm, steady pace, as if gliding over the ocean waves. Upon reaching the podium, she gave a slight curtsy.
"Present, sir," she said with a soft yet firm voice. "Reiko Sato, originally from the planet Akuar. I come from a long line of seafarers and explorers. Our people have learned to respect and protect the oceans, the lifeblood of our galaxy." She paused, looking around with a serene expression.
"Just like the coral reefs in the ocean, our Alliance has been forged by the tides of time, adapting and growing stronger in the face of adversity. I'm here to safeguard the future of our seas and skies, so that future generations can sail on calm waters and enjoy the beauty of our galaxy, salmon."
The last word, "salmon," was a typical expression from her people, meaning something like "dear friends" or "comrades." Reiko exuded an ancient wisdom, as if she had been sailing the oceans since time immemorial. She took her place beside Kai Zamira, forming a contrast between the fiery strength of the Arcadian woman and the tranquil serenity of the Akuarian navigator. Together, they represented the diversity and unity of the Alliance, ready to protect their home both on land and sea.
The officer continued, "Dustin McCoy."
A tall, strapping young man stood up, with sharp features and piercing eyes. His dark brown hair was tied back in a low ponytail, and his tanned skin betrayed hours under the scorching sun of the ranches. He walked towards the stage with an easy gait, as if he were riding a horse across the vast prairies of his homeworld.
Arriving at the podium, he made an informal gesture with the cowboy hat he was holding in his hand.
"Howdy, folks," he said with a drawl typical of cowboys. "Dustin McCoy, from the planet Rancho Viejo, home to the best ranchers in the galaxy."
He flashed a casual smile and continued:
"My family owns several ranching worlds across the Alliance. Since I was a kid, I've been riding among the cattle and learning to tame wild beasts with my magic. They say I'm one of the most powerful mages to come out of our ranches in generations."
He paused, scanning the audience with his eyes.
"But don't let my good looks fool you," he joked with a wink. "Under this hat, there's more than just a cocky cowboy. I'm here to defend our worlds and take care of our herds, so the Alliance never goes hungry or thirsty."
Despite his joking tone, his words carried a deep determination. Dustin McCoy represented the strength and free spirit of the Alliance ranchers, ready to protect their way of life and centuries-old traditions.
He stood beside Kai and Reiko, forming a diverse trio: The cowboy, the warrior, and the navigator, ready to face any challenge that came their way.
The officer continued with the presentation. "Zoran Krasic."
A big, burly young guy rose to his feet, wearing a scowl and a menacing stance. His dark hair was shaved close to the scalp, and his features were chiseled and hard, like they were carved from stone. He had on a tight uniform that exposed several tribal tats running along his muscular arms.
Zoran Krasic stomped up to the stage, his heavy footsteps leaving imprints like he wanted to leave his mark. When he got to the podium, he didn't bother with any formal greetings - just spat off to the side with contempt.
Zoran Krasic, from the mining planet Gorn-7," he growled in a grating voice. "My people have been exploited and enslaved for generations by families like that smug cowboy over there."
He shot a venomous glare at Dustin McCoy, who frowned in confusion.
"McCoy's ancestors and their kind got rich off my lineage's suffering, ripping us from our homeworld to work their mines and ranches like slaves. Generation after generation, they saw us as nothing but merchandise." He spat out the words bitterly.
A tense silence fell over the auditorium. Zoran's fists clenched with fury.
"But not anymore. I came to this academy to get stronger, to avenge my people and break free from the oppressor's yoke once and for all. We won't be anyone's slaves anymore, or bow down to anyone ever again."
His voice thundered with an almost threatening intensity. Dustin opened his mouth to protest, but the high-ranking officer cut in quickly.
"Comrades, this is not the time or place to rehash old grudges," he said in a conciliatory tone. "Here in Unit A1, we're a new family. Our duty is to protect the Alliance above all else."
Zoran snorted derisively but obeyed, taking his place beside the other recruits, not without firing off one last resentful glare at Dustin. The tension was palpable, like a charged storm cloud ready to burst.
The officer cleared his throat, trying to regain control of the situation...
"Let's move on to someone...cheerier? Ren Takagi."
At the sound of his name, Ren Takagi jumped to his feet, fueled by his usual enthusiasm. He was a lean guy of average height, with a friendly face and a permanent smile. His tousled blond hair and bright blue eyes gave him a carefree, upbeat vibe.
He strode up to the stage with an energetic gait, tripping slightly over his own feet in the process. A few cadets stifled laughs at his clumsiness.
"Present and ready for action!" Ren exclaimed as he reached the podium, throwing an overly exaggerated military salute that nearly made him lose his balance.
Clearing his throat, his expression turned more serious, though his eyes still sparkled with mischief.
"Ren Takagi, hailing from the planet Saiton - the world of fun and vacations!" he announced with a wide grin. "Though my homeworld is known for its paradise beaches and nonstop parties, don't be fooled. I'm one badass mage capable of kicking some demonic butt when needed!"
He made a motion like casting an invisible spell, eliciting a few chuckles from the crowd. Even Zoran Krasic cracked a slight smile at Ren's antics.
"Anyway, I may be a bit of a scatterbrain sometimes, but I've got a heart of gold and unbreakable determination," he declared proudly. "I'm here to defend the Alliance and make new friends! Who's with me?"
He raised his fist in the air and let out a rallying cry that resonated through the auditorium. Some recruits joined his raucous cheering, while others just shook their heads in amusement at Ren's shenanigans.
The young mage joined the others on stage, winking at Kurosawa and playfully sticking his tongue out in a friendly gesture. The previous tension seemed to dissipate momentarily thanks to Ren Takagi's carefree and jovial attitude.
"Takemichi Windrider, please come forward," the officer continued.
As her name was called, Takemichi Windrider slowly rose to her feet, legs trembling. She was a slim, petite young woman with long silvery hair cascading in soft waves over her shoulders. Her large violet eyes remained downcast, unable to meet the gazes of those around her.
"That's my sister!" an energetic voice shouted from the back rows. Takeru Windrider jumped up, clapping loudly. "C'mon Takemichi, you've got this! Show 'em what you're made of!"
Takemichi shrank further, her face flushing crimson at her twin brother's effusive display. Though sharing a striking physical resemblance, Takeru was the polar opposite of his shy sister - tall, muscular, and commanding an overwhelming presence.
Poor Takemichi began an unsteady shuffle towards the stage, head bowed. Takeru kept cheering and clapping, soon joined by a few other cadets offering encouragement.
Upon reaching the podium, Takemichi couldn't find her voice. Her cheeks burned, violet eyes brimming with embarrassed tears. She turned her head slightly, seeking her twin's reassuring gaze.
"You can do it, sis!" Takeru flashed a broad smile. "You're the most powerful mage I've ever known! Show 'em what you've got!"
Taking a shuddering deep breath, Takemichi cleared her throat.
"Ta-Takemichi Windrider..." she stammered barely audibly. "F-From the planet Aura..."
She trailed off, nerves getting the better of her. A few mocking snickers sounded from the crowd. Takeru frowned, ready to jump to his sister's defense, but Takemichi found her courage from somewhere.
"I-I hail from the ancient bloodline of celestial mages," she said, her voice wavering slightly but carrying a firm resolve. "Our magic is drawn from the very stars that illuminate the cosmos. Though my frame may appear delicate, I wield formidable power that I've honed through rigorous training since childhood."
Having spoken her piece, she offered a graceful bow and swiftly retreated from the stage, cheeks flushed crimson with embarrassment. Her twin brother Takeru enveloped her in a warm embrace, beaming with pride.
"You did amazingly well, little sis!" he praised, giving her an affectionate squeeze. "I always knew you had it in you to shine so brightly. Your courage burns brighter than you realize."
Takemichi nestled against her brother's chest, partially concealing her flushed face, but allowing a small smile to play across her lips at his words of encouragement.
The officiator cleared his throat once more, commanding the audience's attention.
"Next, we call upon Takeru Windrider to take the stage."
Kaido then knew the lower ranks had finished, now came the potential new leaders, so he paid close attention...
All eyes turned towards the young mage as he rose with a self-assured grin, his towering frame and muscular build cutting an imposing figure - a stark contrast to his meek twin's demeanor. Kurosawa's cameras zoomed in, scrutinizing his every move.
"Greetings, one and all!" Takeru's voice boomed with confidence. "I am Takeru Windrider, hailing from the celestial plane of Aura. Much like my sister Takemichi, I too am a descendant of an ancient lineage of star-born mages. The very essence of our magic flows from the radiant stars that light up the galaxies."
He extended his palm, conjuring a shimmering orb of warm, celestial light as a demonstration. The audience watched in hushed awe at the breathtaking display of his stellar powers.
Takeru's expression turned solemn as he continued, "However, unlike many others here, I have not come with the intent to indiscriminately slaughter demons."
A tense hush blanketed the auditorium at his unexpected words. He met the startled gazes boldly, unflinching.
"Demons are intelligent, sentient beings, just as we are. While some may be twisted by malice, most are merely trying to survive, same as any of us. They are not all soulless monsters deserving of mindless extermination."
Murmurs of disbelief and consternation rippled through the crowd. Kurosawa furrowed her brows, both intrigued and confounded by the unorthodox stance he had taken.
Raising his hand, Takeru quieted the rumbles of dissent. "Make no mistake, I am here to defend the Alliance against any threat. But I shall do so through honorable combat, not genocide. I fight with a merciful hand, not an indiscriminate one bent on massacring entire races. That is the path I walk."
With that, he turned on his heel and strode off the stage, leaving a stunned silence in his wake.
The officiator regained his composure, letting out an exasperated sigh. "And lastly...Kurosawa Kamo, if you would."
Kurosawa rose slowly to her feet, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew all eyes were on her, and a wave of discomfort washed over her. She'd kept to the shadows until now, watching her comrades and trying to go unnoticed. But it was her turn to introduce herself, and a surge of nervousness flooded through her.
She took a deep breath and walked towards the stage with faltering steps. The bright lights were a bit blinding, and she could feel the heat of stares boring into her. Reaching the podium, she cleared her throat and looked at the officer with an expressionless gaze.
"Kurosawa Kamo," she said in a firm voice, trying to mask her nerves. "From the planet Mollo."
She paused, searching for the right words. She didn't want to reveal her true identity or motives for joining the Alliance, but she had to give some explanation.
"I'm an orphan," she commented, some truth in her story. "My parents were killed by demons when I was a kid, and I've been seeking revenge ever since."
The words sounded hollow even to her own ears, but it was the best she could come up with in the moment. She watched the officers, looking for any reaction on their serious faces, but couldn't read anything in their expressions.
"I've been training in secret to develop my magical abilities," she continued. "I'm here to fight the demons and protect the Alliance from any threat."
Her voice grew stronger, gaining confidence as she spoke. She knew it was a lie, but it was a lie that would help her achieve her goal.
She gave a slight bow to the officer and then retreated from the stage, not meeting any of her comrades' eyes. She headed back to her spot in line, feeling a mix of relief and guilt. She'd managed to fool the others, but she knew she couldn't keep up the facade forever.
Meanwhile, Kaido kept watching the recruits closely. He had seen the lie in Kurosawa's eyes, and a furtive smile played across his lips. He had a feeling this young woman was more than she seemed, and he was eager to uncover her secrets.
"Hey Mr. Kaido, you told us they'd show off their voices during the introductions," a reporter commented, sounding a bit confused.
"Ah well, I'm afraid we've run out of time..."
