“The Beginning”

Act 1

( Curtain opens)

Scene:

Inside- The Twin Oaks Houses

December, 15th 1870 Morning 8:45 a.m. St. Catherine Street, Natchez, Mississippi.

Inside- The Twin Oaks Houses

(Maybelle is sitting in an old rickety rocking chair and the fireplace is at her right and is slowly burning with a small fire amongst the scattered logs and soon a knocking at the door can be heard.

(Matilda knocks on the door)

Maybelle:

Who is it?

Matilda : (Speaking loudly with a Southern accent)

It's me, Ms. Jefferson it's Matilda Brown your neighbor!

Maybelle: (speaking loudly with a Southern accent)

Oh!, come on in dear!

(Matilda opens the door and walks into Maybelle's apartment. )

Matilda: (speaks loudly)

Hi, Ms . Jefferson how are you this morning?

Maybelle: (speaks in normal tone)

Oh, I'm fine, how are you dear?

Matilda: ( speaks loudly)

I'm good, Ms. Jefferson!

Maybelle: (Speaks in normal tone)

Good to hear, what brings you by today?

Matilda: (Speaks loudly )

I just came by, to see if you needed anything!

Maybelle: (Speaks in normal tone)

Oh, well not today dear.

Matilda:(Speaks loudly )

Okay, what are you doing?

Maybelle:(Speaks in normal tone)

Nothing much, just thinking.

Matilda:(Speaks loudly )

About what?

Maybelle: (Speaks in normal tone )

Just my life is all, nothing much else to think about today.

Matilda: (Speaks loudly)

Oh, what was your life like?

Maybelle: (Speaks in normal tone)

Well, I guess it depends, on what part you are talking about.

Matilda: (Speaks loudly )

I guess the beginning!

Maybelle :

Well, dear if you want to hear this, you might want to take a seat on the edge of the bed over there. It's going to take a spell to finish this.

(Maybelle starts to narrate her life to Matilda)

( Curtain closes )

End of Act 1

(A Southern accent is constant throughout the play . The volume of speech is normal tone unless noted otherwise.)
