Two Months Later388Please respect copyright.PENANAEc9u7pQZxf
I should have expected that it wasn’t going to be long until the other Southern States followed South Carolina. Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and my home state of Alabama seceded from the Union forming The Confederate States of America. Everyone was a buzz around the plantation when they heard the news. “We’ll show them Yanks how to run a country!” one of our overseers boasted. I shake my head at the thought that people are actually happy about this. To me it is scary; I have no idea what is going to happen not only the United States but with Robert and I. It will be difficult for him to get down here to see me and I do not know if our letters will make it to each other. I do not know what this world is coming to.388Please respect copyright.PENANASZsyVPvvmV
One night when daddy, Aunt Nancy and cousin Catherine and I were sitting in our parlor the topic of a ball in honor of the Confederate State’s President Jefferson Davis. Daddy thought of it as a great idea to host the ball which made Aunt Nancy giddy. “We can invite everyone from the town! It will be a ball that people are begging to get into.” she beamed. “We can even invite Jefferson Davis!” she added hopefully which Daddy shot down explaining to her that Davis is too busy to come out to a ball in our sleepy little town. 388Please respect copyright.PENANArJRL4bWBoL
“Think of all the boys!” Catherine exclaimed. “Both you and I could find a suitor,” she said while nudging me with her arm.388Please respect copyright.PENANAmIJULMr06D
“You have time before we need to start thinking about a suitor for you dear.” laughed Aunt Nancy which angered me because at Catherine’s age, sixteen, I was being prepped on being a good wife, and how to find the perfect man. 388Please respect copyright.PENANAsdcnI8FCbp
“I know, but I would prefer to be married sooner rather than later,” she states. Catherine has always been the desperate type. Since she was fourteen she has been throwing herself at men who have money, it does not matter the age as long as he’s rich and single. I, however, have never been that way, I prefer to marry for love instead of money and status. It just so happens though that it's my job to marry for money and status. 388Please respect copyright.PENANA5RkNd49oWy
We began planning for the ball that night. The ball will be held on April 11th and there will be at least two hundred people invited. It is quite stressful planning for a ball, the food has to be perfect and well prepared, the decorations have to be hung up in the right spot, and the guest list has to be edited and re-edited in ordered not to leave anyone out. Aunt Nancy is in charge of the decoration which is worrisome because all her decor in her house in tacky but for whatever reason Daddy has faith in her. Catherine is too worried about who is coming to be of any help and I try to help with the food but Daddy tells me it’s our slaves’ job to be worrying about that. Although I do sneak down to the kitchen every night to ask Miss Peggy how it’s going, “Oh it’s going, child but don’t you worry, it will be perfect.” she says before shooing me off. 388Please respect copyright.PENANAJ5JoFPE7TY
Before the invitations got mailed off I add one more name to the list, Robert Mcfair. I know it’s a long shot but it doesn’t hurt to try. “Who is Robert Mcfair?” Daddy asks while going through the list one last time. 388Please respect copyright.PENANA0DThOKKerG
I was prepared for him to ask so I had the perfect lie up my sleeve, “He’s someone I met in New York who taught me about Shakespeare.” I say casually . It wasn’t a complete lie because yes, I met Robert in New York and yes, he did teach me a bit about Shakespeare.388Please respect copyright.PENANA3sGvlLqoEt
“Well then, by all means, he is welcome to attend. We will need someone educated besides me to stimulate conversations.” he snorts. I am excited that Daddy is allowing someone from Up North to come to one of our balls. After he approves the final guest list I run up to my bedroom to write Robert a letter.388Please respect copyright.PENANAZmQ72DIbrm

I hope all is well up there. I pray that with my state being newly seceded doesn't effect or change your thoughts about me. I believe it is terrible that we are no longer apart of the Union, I do not know what is going to happen to America or you and me for that matter. It is going to take us a few days longer to send and receive letters and you probably no longer wish to come down here. However, my family is hosting a ball and I convinced my father to invite you by telling him you educated me while I was in New York which was not a lie. I hope you will be able to make it down but if you are uncomfortable I understand. 388Please respect copyright.PENANATkWgUPHwkR
