Since my uncles were going to be my legal guardians they stayed with me while my grandparents took my cousins home to rest.
-Emily?
-Yes?
-The social worker is here. Did you want to talk to her?
-Yes. Thanks.
-Hi! I'm Patricia, they said you wanted to talk to me.
-Yes. Hi, I'm Emily. I wanted to ask you if it would be possible for me to adopt Mia, the baby you're taking,
-How old are you?
-16, I will be 17 in 3 months.
-Unfortunately not. You see, in the UK you have to be 21 to adopt a child, since Mia and her mother were American citizens we applied American law so you would have to be 18. The only way was for your parents to adopt.
-But then I wouldn't be able to take care of her, right? It's just that I go to a boarding school, so I wanted to be able to take her with me.
-Well since you have only a year until you turn 18, your parents can technically be her adoptive parents then. In the meantime, you will take care of her and it will be like an adaptation period when you turn 18 her guard will be passed to you.
-Ok, we can do that. Where do I sign?- I just wanted to get through all this and be back home with her in my arms.
-I like your enthusiasm but we need to arrange a visit to your school and house, there's going to be a judgment and a lot of paperwork.
-How much time is this going to take?
-Depends, it could take a few days, or weeks, we never know. Why?
-Well, my school starts in a week, on Monday.
-Then we have to get to work right away, I will get the paperwork we need to start. Are you her parents?- this time she turned to my uncles. She clearly didn't know what happened.
-No, we are her uncles, her parents got in a car accident.
-I'm sorry to hear that.
She must have realized by our actions that they didn't make it, my aunt's eyes were watery and she was really trying to hold back the tears and my uncle had an arm around my aunt's waist. I was simply looking around trying to abstract myself from the conversation. I hated the pity looks everyone gave me it made me feel even worse.
-So you're going to be her legal guardians from now on?
-Yes, we are still going to take care of the papers.
-Yes, of course. Anyway, I'll get going to take care of everything.
-Patricia.
-Yes.
-Are you going to take Mia?
-No, darling. How about this, since we are going forward with this, I'll ask a nurse to transfer her to your room.
-Thanks that would be very nice.
-You're welcome, I'll get going. It was nice meeting you.
-You too. Bye.
-Since this is packed up we will get going.- my uncle said and hugged me.
-Rest and eat well.- my aunt said kissing me on the head.- I'm going to ask the nurse to bring you lunch, ok?
-Sure.
-We will come back later to meet Mia.
-Ok. Bye.
-Bye, sweetie. Take care.
Soon after a nurse brought lunch, bolognese, it wasn't that bad for hospital food. I ate in silence while checking my phone and responding to texts. I was finishing eating when the nurse came in carrying a baby in her arms, she was sleeping peacefully probably the only reason why she wasn't crying.
-Hi, how are you?- the nurse asked
-I'm good, I was just finishing eating- I said as I walked up to the nurse.
-Oh, I didn't realize, I can come back later if you want.
-No, no need. Can I hold her?
-Of course, honey, just be careful not to wake her up. She has difficulty sleeping.
I picked her the most carefully I could and sat on the bed. She looked so peaceful it was impossible to imagine what had happened just a few hours ago.
-Well I'm going to pick up her crib and clothes and I will be right back.
-Ok...wait you didn't tell me what your name was?
-Mary.
-Just like my mom.
She gave a sad smile before walking away. While she was picking up the things, I finished eating that's when Mia woke up, I was waiting for her to cry but she simply smiled at me and started playing with my hair.
-Hi, Mia. I'm Emily and soon I hope to be your new mom.- I gave her my hand and she curled her finger around mine.
-I see that she's awake.
I looked and saw Mary entering the room with a crib with a bag inside.
-Do you need help?
-No need sweetie, but maybe you could check if we need to change her diaper. Just touch it and see if looks big or see if smells.
-Ahhh, okay.- It was weird, I've seen people doing it, but doing it myself felt different like I was really her mother.
-It's a little big should I change it?
-It's better. Do you know how to do it?
-Yes.
I changed her diaper while Mary assembled her Mia things.
-I'm going to leave you two, but if you need anything just call me.
-Ok, thanks.
The rest of the afternoon was spent with Mia and responding to my DM's while she was asleep, which according to the nurse was because she hadn't recovered her sleep from the accident. By dinner time my best friends, Chelsea Olivia and Naomi show up at the hospital. I was feeding Mia her soup while eating my dinner when they entered the room with their parents.
-Hey girl, how are you feeling?- Chelsea asked.
Chelsea is what's called the standard of the popular girl and cheer captain, not in a bad kind of way, just in terms of appearance. With her blond wavy hair and blue eyes, she could have any guy she wanted, but she only had eyes for her boyfriend Josh, captain of the football team. They were the popular couple of the school. The good thing is that she wasn't arrogant, she was very sweet and supportive, always thinking about what was best for everyone.
As soon as they saw Mia they just stood there looking at me and Mia with confused expressions on their faces. I put my food tray on my nightstand and adjusted Mia so that she was sitting in the bed against my chest.
-I'm good.- I was trying to hold back my laugh but it was becoming really hard. They were just looking at me with esthetical faces, it was hilarious.
-Ok, that's wonderful. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the last time I checked you didn't have a baby sister, so what's going on here?- Naomi asked.
Unlike Olivia and Chelsea whom I met in elementary school and became instantly best friends. I only met Naomi in high school on the gymnastics team, when she entered the school, but we became friends really quickly. Naomi was born in Africa and came to England when she was 3, so she has beautiful dark brown hair with braids, brown eyes, and round glasses.
-This is Mia, my soon-to-be daughter, I hope.
-Daughter?! Is she yours?- Chelsea asked confused and surprised.
-Of course not. Do you think I would get that involved with someone? I'm going to adopt her.- I didn't think that would be the question they were going to ask.
-That makes more sense. In that case, hi Mia I'm Olivia.
We always said that Olivia must have been a fairy in her past life because of her looks and personality. With her red hair, green eyes, and freckles she looked like a real fairy, it was cute. Being introverted, kind, caring for others, and her obsession with books also helped.
They came close to the bed while their parents stayed by the door. Mia grabbed Olivia's hair and inclined herself in her direction. She looked at me for consent before picking her up. I move to the side as she is seated beside me, Chelsea in front of me and Naomi by my side in my chair.
I looked at them, they were all I needed at that moment, their support, strength, and happiness.
-I'm happy you're here with me.
-We wouldn't let you go through this alone.- Olivia said
-We are here for you whenever you need us.- Naomi reply
I know they would, they were always there for me when I needed the most, that's what a true friendship is.
-How are you feeling?- Chelsea asked
-I miss them so much you know.- the tears were now flowing freely from my face- Do you think I will ever forget them, like their voices, something they did or said, I don't know I just don't want to forget anything.
-Of course not, those moments will last forever.- Olivia said giving me her hand- And they are watching you from up there today, tomorrow, and every day from then on.
-They will watch you make new memories with your daughter, find love, get married, have more kids, and more importantly be happy.- Naomi assured.
-And you have this beautiful girl with you so enjoy every moment.- Chelsea said tickling Mia on the belly.
-I'm curious now, Why did you decide to adopt her?- Naomi asked.
-She was in the same accident as me and also lost her mother. I felt like we could help each other and I don't know to explain it but I felt like there was a connection.
-That's so cute. I hope you can win the process and adopt her.- Olivia said giving her to me.
-Me too, I already love her too much.
When I picked her up she started snuggling into me and close her eyes.
-Someone is sleepy.- I said getting out of bed. I changed her out of her clothes and put her to sleep in her crib.
We continued talking for another half an hour before they had to live.
-We will talk tomorrow.- Olivia promised me.
-Okay, bye.
-Bye girl.
-Don't miss us too much.
I can't promise anything.
I gave them all hugs and they left. I changed into my pajamas and right as I was about to go to bed Mia started crying and trying to get up.
I moved her crib to beside my bed and picked her up rocking her, when she was finally asleep I put her down. I lay beside her on my bed touching her hand so she knew I was there.
