“Sir, we have found one,” the ensign said, puffing from her run.
The admiral didn’t like that one bit. This crew should not be so out of shape that they tired so quickly. The admiral glared at the ensign, even though it was good news, the lack of discipline on these ships was terrible. He would have to set strict training regimens. He had earned his rank and deserved, no demanded, to be respected, but there would be time for that, now he needed information about this new universe, the people, the world, the technology, anything that could tell him what advantage he could get. The girl could be forgiven for her lack of discipline this one time, it was, after all, the first world they had come across that had actual magic. Something the people of his home thought impossible “What’s it like?” he asked.
“The people are unstable, but with minimal guidance they would serve well for us.” She said. She had caught her breath enough to stand straight and salute. Well, maybe discipline was better than he thought. He might even use her as an example if he found others of his crew to be lacking.
“Is there any chance the magic can be transplanted into our universe?” It was a long shot the admiral knew.
The ensign looked at him curiously, “Our scientists say no. Sir, haven’t they already said that magic is specific to each universe?”
Well at least she knew the basics of this mission, another point in her favor. “Yes, but if it is similar enough to our own magic maybe we will be able rediscover our own. I don’t like having to rely on cross dimensional trade with an unknown people for our prosperity. You said they were unstable, how?”
“They are constantly at war and genocide is pretty common among the victors.” That wouldnt do, not one bit. It’s bad enough setting up trade between worlds but a world whose government was constantly getting killed off was a nightmare. No this world needed stability and he was going to find a way to achieve that.
“How far back can we travel in their dimension?”
“As far back as we need to, there are no blocks as far as we can tell.” “Good. Find the earliest possible instance of mankind. That is where we will begin.”
