One of the best things about hunting with the Winchesters was when John went on his own and he left you and Dean to take care of Sam. As much as you like John, you loved Dean and Sam more. John was hunting with his good friend Bobby. You loved Bobby and whenever you went to his house, he was so fun, always thinking of things to do with you.
But right now, it’s just you and the Winchester kids. You are playing some cards on the table while Dean cooked dinner for everyone. Sam was taking a nap and so it was very quiet.
“Dean, what do you think will happen when Sam figures it out?” You asked, looking up.
“Figures what out?”
“Come on, Sam isn’t stupid. He’s going to figure out why John is gone all the time. Why his mom died. What is really out there.” You said quietly so you didn’t wake Sam up.
“No, he won’t,” Dean said, dropping what he was doing and walked over to you. “He won’t find out because we’re not going to tell him. He doesn’t deserve this, you know. He deserves to be normal. You’re not going to tell him.”
“I never said I would. I’m just saying the older he gets, the smarter he is. So, just watch out for that.” You said, worried for Dean. You knew that Sam and his mom were very sensitive subjects for him. You hated seeing him in pain so you weren’t going to bring it up again.
Dean walked to the stove and paid attention to the food, not saying another word about it. But it looked like Sam had different plans about that. The door to the bedroom slammed open and Sam came out with John’s journal in his hands.
“Oh shit, Dean.” You said. Dean looked at Sam but you or Dean didn’t have time to say anything before Sam.
“What the hell is this?” Sam said, angry. He slammed the journal on the table, your cards getting messed up.
“Look, Sammy, it’s not what you think.” Dean started to say to him.
“No, Sam, sit down. We have some things to explain.” You said but before you could get anything else out, Dean pulled you to the side.
“What the hell are you doing?” Dean said, hurt in his eyes.
“Dean, he has a right to know. Mary was his mom too. We can’t keep this from him forever,” You said, trying to reason with him. Dean stared into your eyes and he got tears but he wouldn’t let them fall. “I know this hurts you so let me do the talking then.”
You walked back to Sam to see him look through the journal with wide eyes. He was angry and he deserved to know.
“Okay, Sam, the things you see in there are real. John hunts them and kills them.” You said, thinking it was a good way to start off.
“Why?” He said, looking at you.
“Because they hurt and kill people. They’re the bad guys and John saves people.”
“My dad’s a hero?” He asked.
“Yeah, he’s a hero. But, you see, these things are very dangerous. You know how your dad comes home with scratches. I know you watch sometimes.” You said, sitting in front of him.
“Is my dad going to die?” He asked, getting tears.
“No, Sammy, no he won’t. Your dad is brave and he’s strong and he would never think of leaving you. He loves you.” You said, moving some strands of hair behind his ear.
“Did my mom love me?” He asked in a small voice. You never knew Mary and you knew that you wouldn’t be able to talk to her like Dean would. You looked at Dean to see him with tears in his eyes. He hated this but it had to be done. You got up and walked over to Dean, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“He needs you.” You whispered. He nodded and reluctantly walked over to Sam and sat where you were sitting.
“Sam, of course, mom loved you!” Dean said, wiping his unshed tears.
“Then why did she leave me? Why did she leave you and dad?” Sam asked, getting tears.
“Look, mom died in a house fire, you know this,” Dean sighed. He looked at you and you nodded. He turned back to Sam and looked down. “If you’ve read through this all, then you know about demons, right?”
“Yeah, they’re the bad people.”
“Yes, Sam, the bad people. Well, a demon that killed mom and dad could only save us. He went back into your room and tried to save mom but it was too late. Then the demon put the room on fire and dad had no choice but to get out of there. That’s how mom died.” Dean said, getting tears at the memories.
Sam got up without a word and walked over to Dean, giving him a huge hug. Dean let out a sob and he hugged his brother back, making sure that he wouldn’t seem too weak in front of him.
“She loved you too!” Sam whispered. You got tears, wishing you had someone to tell you about your mom. You’ve asked John plenty of questions but there was only so much he could answer before it got redundant.
You wished you knew your dad, the man who abandoned you and your mom.
Now you had no one left.
